For over 15 years Leslie Hoffman has helped New Orleans’ working adults get up and get fit with fun exercise routines and nutrition tips on her award-winning show, “Get Fit with Leslie.”
But now she’s turning a new corner with a new non-profit organization designed to combat childhood obesity – Get Fit Kids Corner.
According to the Center for Disease Control, childhood obesity has doubled in the past 30 years. In Louisiana alone, the childhood obesity rate rose from 15 percent in 2009 to 16 percent in 2011. Obese children are more likely to have higher blood pressure and cholesterol, have a higher risk of diabetes as well as other health, social and psychological problems.
However, CDC studies have also shown that healthy lifestyles, including good eating habits and regular exercise, can prevent childhood obesity and stem the development of related health issues.
To that end, Hoffman created Get Fit Kids Corner to present fun dance classes designed to get kids up and moving.
“Get Fit Kids Corner will be an avenue for kids to have fun while getting in shape and paying attention to their health,” said Hoffman. “I have been dedicated to fitness for decades, and I now want this organization to cross generations. We will train families about their health and provide programs for children and teens that are educational and enjoyable.”

In addition, with the help of volunteer nutritionists and physicians, Get Fit Kids Corner will offer resources to teach families the importance and how-to’s of healthy eating and exercise habits. The organization is also looking to partner with local schools and youth groups to make sure children in the New Orleans area remain healthy.
